Sorry for the instability of the last few days.
SSD broke, slow tech support, a terrible sysadmin (yes, that's me) and you mix all that and you get a weekend to forget.

Hopefully the site will be stable now. Also please report how's the speed on the improvement thread in forum #2033.
Seems Google Translates API is now a paid service for websites to use. ($20 per million characters.)

As Konachan's engine uses that API for the Comment translation feature, it's been disabled. This is a permanent change for the foreseeable future. Comment translation are not longer available.

In following with this, site policy is now changed regarding acceptable posted language(s). As per Shuugo's decision, preferred languages to post here are:

  • English
  • Japanese
Other languages might be fine as long as you provide some sort of translation directly in the comment.

Comment Guidelines will be adjusted to reflect this change.
FYI:
iqdb, the service used for the Find Similar feature, has been moved onto another physical HDD on the server. It was apparently raping HDD I/O and affecting the site.

It's a shared service (pretty much any 'booru with a find similar function uses it) so you can image the I/O throughput generated when several 'boorus access a single service continuously like that.

Site responsiveness should have shot back up.

If you experience any strange lag when anviagting the site and it last for a while, let us know in the Improve thread.
I think Shuugo mentioned iqdb has an effect on the CPU use as well, but I'm not sure about that detail. We're on/off optimizing performance on the new server, so please report any strangeness you encounter. (Be sure to note the symptoms, when it happened, for how long, and if it has been recurring.)
Server move complete.
We are back in Europe.
Please report how it is in the feedback thread forum #2033
Sorry for the downtime.
There was some corruption in the filesystem that was spreading that couldn't be ignored anymore.

Everything should be fine again and no data loss has occurred.
Comment Guidelines have been updated with some significant changes. Please review the new Guidelines ASAP. Questions or comments about the changes go in Improve Thread, forum #2033.
Konachan will be inoperative for a brief moments tonight due to maintenance tasks.
Similar search is going to be unavailable for the next few days.
Will report back when is enabled again.
Konachan.com and Konachan.net will be joining a SOPA/PIPA protest the 18th.

We might be doing another one the 23rd if Google and other big sites finally protest that day too.

If the bill passes on the 24th expect to have some changes to the site.

Duplicate and Similar image service is back up.
Sorry for the downtime.

  • OS was updated and reinstalled.
  • Faulty HD replaced and data redundancy improved.
  • Some optimizations done, and hopefully the site is more responsive.
If you did a donation during the downtime send a mail to info@hanyuu.net providing the e-mail with which you realized the donation and your username in Konachan
For those who tried to reset their password in #konachan before the downtime and are unable to access their account, contact through dmail

Charly has been added to the Mod team.

People found being mean to him will be greatly punished, just sayin'.

Comment Area Clean-up

Due to persistent Comment Guideline violations, Shuugo is now retroactively purging comments that violate the guidelines.

Previously, older comments were grandfathered in and allowed to stay as a courtesy. That decision seems to be backfiring. Users seeing those older comments apparently think they are still safe to make now. As such, a purge will now take place to remove that inadvertant misconception.

As of now and until the comments are cleaned up to the satisfaction of the Owner/Admin, comment flagging is disabled except for users of Contributor rank. This is to prevent false flagging of comments and streamline the clean for the time being.

All users of Contributor rank are invited and asked to help with the clean-up effort.
Simply flag any comments you see from any posts that violate the current guidelines. Comment posting date is no longer taken into account. (If you are unsure, flag the comment anyway; a mod will eventually get around to reviewing later on.) Special focus is asked for:

  • Simple "Like" comments with no additional content/explanations. (Rule 01, 1st half)
  • "Dumb/useless" comments that provide no real content. (Rule 01, 2nd half)
  • Comments in a language other than ENG or JPN without translations provided. (Rule 10)
All rules still apply, but the above comment types are of particular priority for removal. (Subject to change at Shuugo's discretion.)

Discussion of the clean-up effort will take place in the Improve Thread, forum #2033. I also have ideas to help organize the effort further. Please post in the Improve Thread if you are a Contrib and wish to participate.
Konachan.com and Konachan.net will be joining the ACTA and TPP protests this saturday.
Winner of the anniversary contest: rargy

Backup entries in case failure to reply to the e-mail:
1. Drakeo
2. Jacksturbation

More than a 10% didn't have their e-mail addresses in their accounts. Next time please read the rules of the contest to avoid getting picked up and disqualified after checks.
  • Star Voting fixed in Google Chrome (hopefully forever).
  • Link to Advanced Search in the .net domain fixed.
  • The mascot project is facing another wall on it's way to deployment, but it's still progressing slowly.
In order to fight against the mis-representation facebook pages of konachan, we have created an official one.

We will soon be doing some exciting new announcements related to the site and a contest for facebook fans.

Scheduled maintenance starting in 30 minutes. Will last about 24 hours. Probably less.
Sorry for the downtime. There might be some rough parts still that need to be cleared but they will be getting fixed in the next few days.

Clear cache before reporting anything broken.

Also be sure to stop by forum #2033 and give feedback about anything you might see.
We are aware of some bugs (similar search, forum links, counter...) and will be fixed later today.
For those who have realized/noticed it yet:

Kona was once again updated.

We're now on v3 of the Moebooru engine. Bugs are being worked on by Shuugp as we find them. Despite what the ticker says, please direct any bug reports to forum #16971.

On an unrelated note:
I've spoken to Shuugo about the minimum res for keeping images on Kona. We've agreed the absolute minimum are:

  • Width - 1000
  • Height - 700
I plan on purging the images that do not meet these requirements in the near future. If anyone wants to preserve these images, NOW is the time to pull them from the site:

We have no problems with width.

To Moderators:
Any image equal or less than 999px in width or 699px in height are to be deleted on sight for violating Minimum Resolutions.

Contributor are ask to now refrain from uploading these images sizes.

1000-1023 in width and 700-719 in height images are fair game for the gray-zone policy. Those are still at mod discretion.

I will announce when I plan on actually doing the purge as final warnings. Question and discussion about this decision are to be directed at forum #2033.
Image Purge - Stage One
Images of height:<600 have been marked for deletion. If you want them, please download them within the next 24-hours.
Sorry for the random downtimes for the last hour.

Was updating the code. Everything should be back to normal.

Image Res Purge: Stage 2

Images of height:..640 now marked for deletion. Again, you have 24-hours from this post to download them before they are removed.

Image Res Purge: Stage 3

Images of height:<660 are now marked for deletion. This is your 24-hour notice.

Image Res Purge: Stage 4

Images of height:<675 are now marked for deletion. This is your 24-hour notice.
Sorry for the downtime and dataloss (~3 hours worth it).

Reverted the code. The posts have been reuploaded but missing tags.
Sending new dmails is temporarily disabled.
Sending new dmails has been limited to privileged users or higher until the system is fixed.
