I was wondering where that stupid stereotypical crap about "normal" people thinking anime is hentai actually came from. I mean has it come from because it's on porn video sites or what?
Anyone who assumes anime is all porn is guilty of having watched it themselves. So they should mind their own perverted business.
I wonder if they'd get all flustered if you got into their face about seeing it and saying "How do you know if unless you've seen it?" or just similar pressuring.
I didn't need to tell anybody. I've been watching anime for years, so most--if not all--of my friends know. So do my parents. It didn't negatively affect their opinion of me.
@Agos oh la la , that's interesting question man , like you said , i'm an Otaku too , but when i place my poster i bought in " Manga festivel " in my room , well, my parents say nothing because they think that's not a bad thing , and now in my room there're 2 poster of Sora no Otoshimono ( because my love is Ikaros - chan )
to be honest, my family couldn't care what i take interest in...they didn't question me when they heard 'PANTIES! PANTIES! PANTIES!' coming from my laptop, or say anything from my ever growing collection of manga... in fact, if anything, my family has bought me manga and anime dvds before...
however, friends ask me why i'm into that stuff and why do i spend so much on it all... one of my old college friends used to watch anime as much as me, if not more, and got me into so many animes... we used to talk about anime ALL the time... sadly, he got into thinking that every anime was the same, nothing different in them, the same story and stuff...
only a few people have said to me 'anime...you mean you watch anime sex stuff?' they're damn stereotypical... although, yeah, i do watch hentai...mainly incest stuff, or rape... *cough* i have to admit every anime i've ever watched has made me cry... from g.i.t.s to ore imo...
i don't really care about what other people think about my love for anime.. so... LONG LIVE OTAKUS!!
I didnt really tell my parents they kinda just picked up on it. My Dad loves the Japanese stuff. he reckons the Japanese (or asians in general) are amazing and incredibly creative and out of this world which is what I think. Mum thinks its cute (and better than my 'emo' stage) but she doesn't know about the 'darkness' that can be found in the world of bright coloured hair and abnormally large eyes. If I'm caught watching yaoi or anything ecchi, I'll surely be dead.
They faced it as a normal thing.
normal thing
Eh, why would I tell my father "Hey, father, I take an interest in anime, the stuff that stereotypically is frowned upon because people think that it's mostly just tentacle porn"... Though, I would love to see his reaction from that.
Well let's see,

Dad - doesn't have a clue (haven't spoken in ages)
Mum - thinks its fine, except for the occasional "you watch this too much".
Step dad - hates everything to do with me anime/manga/Japan included.
Siblings - watch it or have watched it as well.
Friends - are all Fans like myself, or don't know.

Overall - I'd say a pretty good response however I'm sure that would change if my mum saw some of the more "ecchi" parts in some of my anime.
I think it's stupid to judge someone on things like this.
As long as you are not a dick I will have no reason to hate you.
Unfortunitly most people rit in the "dick" catigory.
Hmmm well let's see what my surroundings think about it.

Father : "Can you make money later with all these Anime Figures ? "
Me : " I have mostly limited editions and they only get produced once, so yeah I can sell them for a credit later ... why ? "
Father : " Oh nothing, it's cool then ... "

Mother : " They're so cute ! "
Me : " Mom please stop touching them ... "

Little Brother : " Naruto shipuden, One Piece, Naruto !, OnePiece ! RASSENGAAAAAANNNN ! GOMU GOMU NOOOOO !!! "
Me : " STFU !!! "

Rest of Family : Don't know it or are indifferent about it.

Friends : Don't know it, are indifferent or watch it too.

Girlfriend : " Let's watch some Hentai :3 "
Me : ...again ? when were we last in theat--
Girlfriend : " stfu and let's watch some !
Me : sight....

This is more or less my situation. ^^''
well, only some of my friends know.
and one of my cousins know.
and my brother knows i watch anime but not obsessed with it.
one of my friends says im obsessed with Japan /:
im not that obsessed.
i like their music, clothing style, and their culture.
is that being obsessed?
im not that extreme with Japan.
i guess you can say.. /:
My dad didn't really have anything against it.
He just said: "Ok, cool." And that was it.
When I later told him about cosplay though...
That is another story...
Trying to explain to a middle-aged man why some people like to dress up like characters from anime or manga is not an easy thing.
My dad gave me a thumbs up and said "That's my girl!" (I thank him and Sailor Moon for my love of anime). Mom just let out a sigh and said "Not another one..." :)
I salute your dad for raising a female anime fan. Unless you're fangirl-ish... Fanboys and fangirls girl give whatever fandom they associate with a bad rep. Judging from your behavior on the site, I'm guessing you're not though. (Not directed at you, but I... "dislike"... "fans" who think they know everything about anime but haven't watch anything beyond mainstream, network aired anime.)

And I salute your mom for being a (perhap begrudgingly? ^_^;) understanding mother and wife. ^_^ Just out of curiosity, do you and your dad sometimes sit together to watch something? (I'm guessing your mom would go do something else? Extra points for her if she at least tries to watch though ^_~)
No I'm no feral fangirl, though I do have my moments as we all do. ^^
Dad and I will hang out and go through our little collection and randomly watch Sailor Moon, Escaflowne, Chobits, perhaps a bit of Full Metal Alchemist. He's tried anime based games but can never beat me, it's fun. And mom has given every series we have tried to make her watch a try. She watches three episodes and, if she doesn't like it, drops it and just ignores us.

Edit: Father appreciates the salute. ^^
Mainstream stuff... Hm, I wonder if Gintama counts as mainstream..
Pretty much everyone knows I'm an otaku because I'm always drawing and reading manga. But my dad thinks anime is stupid and pointless. My mom is ok with it and encourages me to continue drawing it, but to branch out and draw other things to. I got my sister to watch a couple of animes, and she liked them, but since she is one of the popular people, she doesn't tell anyone. My brother loves Pokemon and Vocaloid (he's 7) and most of my friends love anime as much as I do, if not more!
I would definitely say im an Otaku I enjoy like this way i dont really let it bother me a whole lot what other people think. Im Really Just now starting to get into anime but i really enjoy it and i figure on watching alot more in the future.
If you're just really getting into it, you can't really can yourself an otaku.

I'd say you're first a fan. You'll hopefully flow down through the otaku path instead of the fanboy/fangirl path. On the flip-side, you hopefully won't level up past and into the extreme/hardcore otaku category.

Heaven forbid you ever turn into a hardcore otaku fanboy/-girl...
My mom is pretty ok with it. she just says im her crazy kid but she loves me. I dont know how my "father" would feel about it sence i dont live with him but he knows i like it alot and has even gotten me a sword knowing i have a love for katanas.

As for siblings my second eldist brother loves anime and the whole japanese video game thing that goes with it. Huge FF fan.

One of my sisters enjoys watching shojo anime and supports my love for the japanese culture she has even read some of my manga, though the rest of my siblings are indiffrent about it.

My step dad shakes his head and says im an odd one and comments on how big anime characters eyes are. my step mom .... her comments are never coherent to me as i try not to listen to her for longer then i have to.

Friends or my "friends" most of them hate anime and say im obsessive and just need to stop. i have one that will stick up for me that likes anime as well just no were near the extent i do. And i have one that is what i call a fake nerd. she only wants to watch stuff with flashy men in it and only desires to stay with a series if there is a chance of two good looking male characters have yaoi moments. -sigh-
Both are dead, so...They have no opinions. But I don't think they would care regardless.
if i worded it exactly like you have in the title, they would have responded with "...whats an otaku?"

however i've been this way since i was pretty young so they already know my interests. they are not impressed, though they dont really care.

My dad likes japanese stuff as well, mostly only cameras and stuff since he used to be in to photography. otherwise he seems to have a real hate on for japan and it's people. I can understand since we're chinese, but that was over half a century ago. people need to learn to stop blaming a group of people who are not responsible for what the group did half a century ago. Even if so we are no longer bound by those same boundaries anymore. it's already begun now with travel and the internet. some day we are all going to be united under a single flag and lose all the old borders. Or so i would hope.

Ya... unfortunately, I think it is more likely for the world to spontaneously combust. Well, you didn't say peacefully. One country might get strong enough to force all of the others to submit and walk under their flag, but I find that extremely unlikely as well.

yeah, it's unfortunate. Despite humanity being divided into two again and war being frequent, at least in gundam they made it to that point. UC's opening speech really moved me. it was perfect. combined with the music that gave a hint of hope towards the future of humanity it drove the scene into my top favorites.

for humans to ever join together and work as one we would require an external party to be seen as the enemy. that being the case i change my mind. I want angels to come and trample the earth. of course i also hope that the fate of the world is not in the hands of an emo teen aged boy who whines all day.
Let's see... I started to read/watch manga and anime somewhere in 2005, I considered myself as an otaku since 2006. First it was my mum that knew, she would often ask me "what are you reading for hours?" or "So many yells, what are you watching in chinese?" (fighting scenes, don't think perverse things :P). Then I explained what each thing was and that it were japanese. She accepted quite well since she watched anime herself as a kid and with me when I was a kid. My father never knew my interests 'cause I dont talk to him that much.

The next step, friends. My little circle of friends didn't criticize, just thought it was weird until I showed to them cool series of manga/anime and even cool music. I even putted a friend of mine starting to like yaoi xD I was still on highschool back then, colleges would ask me what I was hearing on my mp3 or something of the kind and they would laugh, but it didn't took that much time for them to stop pestering me about that.

Last one, rest of the family. Some didn't knew what anime/manga was, others didn't even bothered to ask. But the funniest thing is that my seconds cousins that are in another country liked anime and manga too ^_^ I was really surprised to figure that out like 2 years ago... now I sometimes talk to them to show some interesting manga or the other way around.

The rest of the community and people I know don't know much about that I'm an otaku, or that I read manga. Anime and music is easier to know since I publish videos on my fb wall sometimes. I don't understand why some people picture otakus being bad persons just because we have different interests than them -_-'
mom dad I'm an otaku!

mom & dad : 'kay..
