I've just discovered an extension for google chrome users that allows you zoom into pictures by just hovering over them

This is already built into the site. Hold down SHIFT and hover the mouse over the thumbnail. In fact, you get a more informative preview than the GC extension.

The pictures are not as big as it is on the extension

Maybe so, but our feature is built into the site and lets ANY browser that supports it to use it. No need to hunt down a browser-specific extension to use it at all.

Also, since it's built-in, it's less of a bandwidth hog for us since it's already optimized for site usage. Bandwidth usage may be a flat-rate cost to you, but it isn't for a server/website in many cases. Any how...
