Just how "otaku" are you?
In other words, how dedicated to anime are you? Of course that includes manga, video games and anything else of that nature. You can also include how long you've been into anime and whether or not you consider yourself to be well-versed and why.
I'm more of a weeaboo(really don't like on how this site has there personal opinion but it's the only one with the definition) than anything. Though i'm not completely obsessed with it.
I'm probably more of weeaboo than you Tiki. For more than half a year now almost everything I watch is an anime. These days I usually watch 30 to 40 episodes of anime a day and lately I've been using some japanese words and terms (only a few here on kona but still). Am I ashamed of it? Of course not! And you shouldn't be either. I mean there are lines that shouldn't be crossed (I'm sure I've crossed one or two already) but you seem O.K. in my book. At least you're not a mainstream zombie or a wannabe otaku (I hope that dosen't offend anyone).

P.S. If you don't mind my asking, how much anime do you usually watch in a day?

P.S.S. I miss your old avatar...
Let's see,
I watch about 3 episodes of anime a day, I frequently browse anime websites on a daily basis, I don't really read manga all that much, I don't cosplay, I have a Lucky Star poster in my room, I am going to be my anime club's new vice president this coming autumn, and I became an official otaku in 2005.

Not sure how I can scale my otakuness on just that alone. Is there a scale that goes from 1-Hikkikomori?

I think you're a... 4? I wouldn't know, but based on what you've told us it can't be that high a rating.

I think I'm a 7 at the very least. I watch a ton of anime but I don't always remember things like studios or the names of directors or voice actors and such. Aside from Pokemon I haven't played many japanese games and I don't read manga much (but that's only because I can't afford 'em). I also don't have any anime memorabellia, once again this is only because I don't have the money right now. But as soon as I get a well paying job all of that will change :3 Oh yeah and I don't cosplay either.
I think i would be a 4 also. I watch a lot of anime... well use to anyway i kind of ran out of stuff to watch T_T hence why i started reading manga. I don't have any anime posters but i do have random posters of movies i watch and 1 game i played.

P.S I have a real Tiki in my room ^_^
Hmmm... how much of an otaku am I? I wonder... I've watched over 250 anime. Last time I counted it was 264, and that was last year. I've been on anime since 2006 I believe. I've played a few Visual Novels (of which I saved a some of them on DVDs). And read a few manga. I own the second and third volume of the Spice and Wolf light novel, the first two volumes of Ah! My Goddess! manga, the first two volumes of Chobits, the first two volumes of Shinobi Life and the first two volumes of "Black God" ("Kurokami"). I also have all the "Inuyasha" series on DVDs (NOT bought, just put them there). Also the four movies from Inuyasha. Of which I have no idea where the second and third went. I also have ~500 episodes of "Detective Conan" on DVDs (again, NOT bought). And three of the 15 movies from Detective Conan on DVD. What else.... oh yeah I have "Boku wa Imouto ni koi o suru", "Gin-Iro no kami no Agito" (also known as "Origin: Spirits of the past") and "Beyond the Clouds, the Promised Place" (also known as "The Place Promised in Our Early Days") on DVDs. What else.... oh yeah I also have the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! GX episodes on DVDs.

Also out of the anime I've seen, some of them I rewatched a couple of times. Like Myself;Yourself, 8 times. Steins;Gate I think 13 times, Hanbun no Tsuki 4 times (gawd I love Hanbun no Tsuki)... and other that don't come to mind.

So how would you rate me?
Pff, I am nothing. Maybe a 0.3 :D

I don't read news, I don't follow new releases, not for anime, not for videogames. My friends are the ones keeping out an eye on what I should watch/play. I have had friends bug me constantly about a series I should watch... and I get to watch it a year later. I haven't seen any anime series in over a year (or two? or three?) though I used to see maybe two a year back when I was younger and more into it. Ditto for games, I tend to play/finish four~five games a year.

Of course, there's the fact that most of my games are RPGs which get around a 100 hours invested before I am done with them. And the anime that I used to watch would be one episode a day, so they would last me a few months, too.

I consume my anime/videogames as a delicacy, on small chunks throughout a lengthy amount of time :B
I can't remember when I actually indulged myself into anime. Honestly it started back with Toonami and Adult Swim back God knows when. I was at least 9-11 when I watched them, and I really liked them.
Ever since then, I've gradually become more addicted, reading manga often, drawing anime since '06, and watching Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon at best. (Didn't have a decent enough computer to use, and I was a kid, didn't care about the internet yet.) and I wasn't that obsessed.
Then I really started to swing into it around mid '08 and was fairly into it. I loved to watch anime and read manga.
Unfortunately, due to life occurrences, my watching anime and reading manga has dropped significantly. Probably do to me getting an Xbox 360 and become a hardcore gamer for about 2 years, then switching to a PS3. But I gradually became a casual player.
But the last few months, I've finally managed to slow down my life a bit, and picked up watching anime again thanks to Netflix Instant stream, and it was Gurren Lagann.

Since then, and a month ago, I have watched several animes, finishing them and started a few mangas and caught up on what I missed. My passion for drawing them has come back and I did a panel sketch of Naru Narusegawa from Love Hina.

As far as things I own anime related. I had been collecting the Anime Insider and NewType USA magazines since '07, came with posters and such, but unfortunately, they were discontinued. I really only own posters. A pirated copy of the Eureka Seven movie, and 1 anime book, a .hack novel.

I don't have anywhere near the stuff I wiah I had. I'm a sad Oatku... :(
Eh? :3 ...While I was sleeping this thread suddenly started using ratings. It's actually pretty interesting though, keep the posts coming guys!

@Tensa I don't want it to be my job to decide the ratings but I think you're an 8 because you're 5 years my senior as an otaku and you've seen much more anime than me (give me a year or two and I'll be ahead of you, I finished 3 series yesterday!)

@SK7000 I'd say 1 or 2, about the same as my sister.

@Cade Sure you can be an otaku after just 2 years! (actually that's longer than me ^_^') but just 300 eps in all that time? I'm not sure what to make of that, you seem to be taking your time. Would you agree with a 5?

@BRS I feel your pain, I don't have anything but a labtop. I can use it to watch pretty much any anime I want but I still want things like DVD's and manga :'3
O.o I was way off when I said 300. Just checked anime-planet.com and 953 episodes is my total.

Do you think that's enough to bump up the rating to 6?
I think that we should use my bro as a standard rating of 1.
FYI, he loves anime more than any other media, but he doesn't watch anime online(or at all actually)
He does read mangas in the library or the bookstore(cuz we can't afford any)
he has seen about 5 animes...
neither of us possesses any kind of merchandise

every 1 doubles the otakuness of the person.
that would make a 10 somebody, who watches animes literally non-stop-24/7 and cosplays non-stop-24/7 and lives in a cosplay house, with anime characters painted/engraved on the walls and has seen/read/played around 5000 animes/mangas/novels/games(the bigger the numbers get, the less significant the actual number becomes, and we'll have to round off)

(10 would be an increase by a factor of 1024)
That would make Cade a 7 or 8
or, if we say that lack of merchandise deducts ratings, he/she could well be a 6

awrite?
(no offense BTW)
So if you roundabout the nr. of episodes it will be 1024 for Cade.
Should I really go through all the anime I saw and check how many episodes total? In any case, it's OVER 9000!!!
Tensa said:

Ha! I never get tired of that X3
yeah, but it's only an increase by a factor of 200 for cade.
also, we haven't decided on the merchandise yet.
also, take into account that the higher your rating, the more places you will drop for not having merchandise.

example:
you have a rating of 3, but you only have a quantity merchandise of level 1.
you drop 1 place, because there's little difference from 2 to 3.

if you have a rating of 8, but no merchandise, you can drop a lot more, because the increase in merchandise from 1 to 8 is 32 times greater than from 1 to 3.

but that's making it too mathsy, so forget all of the above in this comment, let's keep it simple

tensa, you have a rating of 8
What about me? I watch anime 24/7 but I don't have any merchandise.
I think I'm below average "geek" which "otaku" basically means. I only read manga, watch shows and play VN and other JPN games only for entertainment. I don't collect stuff either. However I have some comics like Dragon Ball but stopped when I started to use the internet.
don't worry, I don't have merchandise either...
but if we're knowledgeable about anime, it's fine.
I asked for a rating, I think you might be better at it than me. Anyway I'm pretty knowledgeable about anime, especially considering I haven't been able to use the internet from home for very long.
ah, you're flattering me again...
I'm bad with compliments, I never know how to reply except thank you...

we also have to consider your age...
hmm...
I'm not sure...
how many series do you know reasonably well and/or have watched?
Gregol said:

I don't think age should matter. I've been watching anime for as long as I can remember but I've only been truly dedicated to the artform for a year or so.

Hi-mit-su. That's a seceret ;3 even my MAL account isn't catalouged with all of the anime I've seen. I'm not done adding the ones I've seen (I forgot some X3) and if left alone I can watch more than 260 episodes of anime a week so I would need to update it constantly. Now if you need me, I'll be finishing School Rumble.
I'd consider myself to be a 7 on the otaku scale.

I watch around 16 episodes of anime a week (from 16 different series). I can't even begin to fathom how many anime I've watched. My bedroom walls are basically plastered with anime posters I got out of magazines.

Then there's all the manga I have. There's a good chunk of change invested in that. I try to buy any Japan related book when I see one, so I have at least five novels of that sort.

I also enjoy both Japanese and South Korean cinema (especially of the horror/ghost genre).

I try to learn as much as I can about Japan as well, watching travel shows dealing with different regions of the country and of course learning from anime itself about the culture.

I love Japan.
I love Japan too but if I ever learn anything about it it's by watching anime. I'd love to go to Japan one day, at least for a little while... or... I could just live there. Anyway I plan to do more research once I've seen a satisfying amount of anime. And I'd like to take a Japanese language course in college.

Unless you get a perma vise and buy land/a house there it won't work that easily. ~70% of the landlords don't accept foreigners.

Also if you plan on visiting Japan, make sure you don't cross a nationalists march or something. They will insult you.
Well I'll at least visit Japan at least once in my lifetime. Nationalists? Pffft, like that could stop me! Hmmm... hey Tensa have you ever been to Japan? You seem to know a lot about this kind of thing.
One of my friends over at deviantArt always had the dream of going to Japan. Some years ago she had saved enough to afford a trip over there, and stay for a few weeks. She totally loved it, and afterwards, her life goal seemed to be to save enough money to go back every few years.

If you are convinced you are going to love it, it is worth the effort required to go, or at least to visit. Just... be warned that as a foreigner you will never fit in, no matter how many years you live in there, people will always treat you as an outsider (if not outright rude, you'll just notice they aren't as welcoming as they could be).

I think it's tied to the culture, so you'd best do your research and be ready. Or just ask our local expert on Japanese culture, Stahn ^_~
Even if they did insult me, I wouldn't understand them anyway :). Charm and politeness can win anyone over.

You could still live in Japan without being a citizen. If you wanted to live there until you died you'd have to do some paper work and stuff, change around your status and such.

Japanese people hardly ever buy their on land because it's so expensive.

P.S. Damn! I almost forgot to mention that I am a rabid lover of Tokyo fashion and, of course, of traditional and modern kimono.
I like the sound of being a regular visitor. Maybe I'll just do that instead of settling down there. If anything it should be much easier than becoming an actual citizen of Japan.

@emmy I love kimonos, you love kimonos, is there anyone here who dosen't love kimonos? :3
ecchifan96 said:

Nope. Kimonos are bad ass and cute at the same time. They can also be sexy ^_^ what's there not to like? Would like to get one my self sometime.

They do allow permanent residency without requiring citizenship (JPN is one of the harder places to acquire citizenship anyway.)

It depends on location. Areas with lots of foreign tourism is fine for the most part. So any of the major metro zones (like Tokyo) are quite foreigner friendly for the most part. Much like anywhere else, opinion is split in JPN regarding foreigners. It's usually the more rural areas that are kinda antagonistic/hostile to foreigners. Even then, you're bound to find people who find foreigners of any type "exotic".

In my case, I'm of asian ethnicity and apparently VERY generic looking as an asian. I've been (mis)taken for all the major asian ethicities there (including Filipino somehow, by a filipino...) So while my case is skewed a bit (my physical appearance let's me blend in quite well it seems...), whenever JPN people realize I'm actually american, they're kinda stunned. I actually got into a friendship with a couple of little old ladies at the local udon/soba shop at the train station near where I used to live there. Kinda funny because they literally once asked another customer if he would believe I wasn't JPN. ^_^;

Still, I have heard horror stories. One of my sister's friends went on an exchange or homestay program there (might've been an ENG program, don't recall). Seems she got stuck out in the boonies there and got scarred for life. She's afraid of ever going back. Wherever she was sent, the locals apparently didn't like her or something, so she was treated poorly. How much of that is true, I dunno since I wasn't there and this is secondhand info, but I can kinda see that happening.
