If nothing else, I'd say most posts will fall into either character or original. If it's not tagged original, but it has no character tags, I typically assume it's original. If you're confident on that fact, it's probably even safe to go ahead and tag it original yourself. As far as the categories go, I've only found a small group of pics that are worthy of the cute-contest but don't fit in a category. That would be pics with actual characters where the emphasis is not on just a single character. For example: post #48158. If it fits, it definitely would go in the character category, but it's more than one character, and the focus is on neither.
