If you look at the surface of the desk she is standing on it becomes apparent that the artist was trying to send a different sort of message.
I popped the piece's title into Google Translate and it seems to be called "To be alive". So I reckon she was bullied and committed suicide.
That's an even more somber theme than I had supposed.
Her table is also the only one misplaced to not have a neighbor.
Makes those cheerful class mottoes at the front of the room feel empty and hypocritical...
Oh, thanks for adding translations. It certainly deepens the tone of the image.
This picture highlights a problem I have with most of the stories in anime, manga, and games where school bullying takes place. Presumably the school has a policy against it but they protest that they were "unaware" the victim was being bullied. But there is always plenty of evidence right there. Is someone selling the story she did that to her own desktop herself? And that's just the tip of it.

I was bullied a bit in school but one thing I noted is that the perps were always careful never to leave any evidence behind. That never seems to happen in anime, as in this picture.
I've heard of bullying like this.
Writing bad things on the targets table like die or other really mean things.
This picture makes me so sad..
