Isn't stockings the same as thighhighs?
Thighhighs hold themselves up, stockings are held up by straps.
Usually stockings is only used when what is holding them up isn't clear because there is a couple different items that can hold them up. If the garter_belt or whatever is visible they have a tendency to get tagged thighhigh, though I'm not sure why.
