Each portrait was cut and cropped to match in dimensions from the source image (2 pixels at most were trimmed) and the borders redrawn (solid black). Did it for alignment/uniformity.

I was contemplating a plain white BG (like the original) but went for a gradient BG instead. I figure if people actually use this as a desktop WP (as intended), it should have some color.

As such, people still on 4:3 aspect ratio monitors may have problems fitting this to fullscreen. I dunno if demand is high enough to warrant posting a 4:3 (1600x1200) version or not though. I originally started with it as 4:3, but thought 16:10/8:5 would be better, as it would cover 16:9 as well.
