Gregol said: IMHO, men and women are already equal, in the western world, at least, so the next question is world-poverty...
I'm not sure the amount topics/subjects are the way to regulate post size SK7000. May I suggest you set up some guidelines to aid us all here in managing the thread? You can always edit the first post afterwards for first time users. Maybe a simple "throw around only THIS ball for now method?" system
derail from the poverty question? Just a little, really :3
Note the epic size of the post but this is a reply on a single thing which takes depth over width :3
I can understand that most people see the difference in cultures and countries in emancipation and take that as an argument to say that women are being treated fairly when considering the neighbours. If that is the case than may I remind you that lot of first world neighbours live in "pardon my language" shitholes and make for a very poor justification of first world standards?
Most people should however be made aware that men and women are NOT treated equally including the first world. Society has a hopelessly askew perception of itself and its population regarding men and women. These examples can be seen EVERY DAY in EVERY COUNTRY and I'd prefer not to have to start throwing sources here unless you seriously doubt this. rabble rabble rabble(If you source reference "Men come from Mars and women come from Venus" I will slap you around with so many sources that counter this it'll make your head spin >_>. I don't say "book burning time!" often/ever but that one is pushing the buttons)
I believe what should have been said was: "They SHOULD be treated equally" because in our current world this is still not the case even though the Americans made a good move on it not so long ago to stand up for the right of women, (which reflected by their increase in economy exceeding Europe at the time as women contributed a great deal to society in all fields at the time) the only true difference I would care to make between men and women is physical.
The correlation with mind, and matters of it, are commonly overstated without base and contributed to genetics rather than differences in society, culture, resources and power. Power balance is somehow always overlooked, obviously if you're in charge of the resources you have more authority when speaking and deciding things but this image on gender roles is being self sustained by a warped society propagating the view further. When women are in charge the same can be seen as the cases for men. Setting up such experiments is obviously difficult but possible. For some reason though we all seem to run to the easy answer and confirmation bias does the rest. I'd like to understand why that happens a little better myself...but my view on the nature of humans already has a nice coloured crayon for this :/ *cough*Too many selfish and studid people
History has a misprint of women waiting for food and men hunting. Somehow everyone assumes this to be true when there is already significant evidence to show otherwise. Even children were involved in hunting, women were part of wars and men also took care of groups. Both primate studies and our digging up of history have shown this to be true. Yet somehow our society and culture remain ignorant.
The following fields I have noticed to be reported to have been strongly affected: Relations, Career, Education. I'm sure there are a lot more but these are the ones I focussed on. Case examples:
These are just SOME of the cases.
Career No promotions for women to positions of power OR lack of ambition from their own view on gender roles holding them back.
Relations Who will be taking care of children starts off on the wrong foot instead of focussing on what is good for the group/family/partners. Dividing tasks properly and communication on fair grounds. Statistical analysis has already proven that partners with double incomes have more stability/health, last longer as a result and deal better with problems. (Also a correlation with unemployment and suicides was found in single income relations and divorce actually but that's another story)
Education Promising female math students that decided to swap just because "girls couldn't do math and their career would be affected". Passing down a Harvard offer on beta studies based on gender roles is damaging to both that person, the country she will be working in and in some, it damages all of us as we're missing out on our max potential as a race.
Lack of males in education is fuelling this problem as gender roles are being overstated in classes with only female teaching staff. (The same applies to most other fields that are dominated by women or men.)
Summary: Women and men are NOT treated equally in modern society. They should be, we as a race would benefit from it.
Sorry for derailing so much on world poverty (which I must say I find interesting!) but I had to speak my mind on this. It bothers me to have so little people I know that actually care about emancipation, always being selfish and ignorant about their actions. I'm glad you feel it is important to treat women and men equally so I felt like I wouldn't be wasting my time sharing with you the information I had as I have the idea with so many other people.
To return to your question: I suggest the idea that poverty is the only true root of war as it means a lack of basic provisions which undermines all forms of morality and rationality which is a fundamental requirement for any form of war. (I can already poke some holes in this statement myself but I'd rather let you see through them first to avoid further contamination)
