They're a type of ceremonial kimono. "Suits" is a more western fashion term.

I do believe that's mainly a western influence. The ring, if I recall, is a bit more symbolic and meaningful in christian (western) weddings/ceremonies. Shinto weddings had their symbolism via other means, I think. I'm not well-versed in traditional JPN wedding ceremonies. Apparently, marriage in modern JPN is mostly a legal matter first and foremost, ceremonial second.
