I may not be a fan of X and Y(or anything beyond Diamond/Pearl/Platinum), but he's Red. He doesn't need a mega ring

They did this in the recent Pokemon Origin anime. He didn't where anything. It functioned more like in the games where you give your Pokemon an item to "hold, and Red has the other crystal thing, but doesnt hold it either.
