Iron needs to be around 500-600 degrees Celsius before glowing faintly red. That would still be painfully hot.
That might be so, but anything that is hot, even if not glowing, radiates heat waves that would clearly distort the image around the branding part of the iron (I was a certified fireman while I was in the USNavy, I had some reservations though as I was the only one in my class that got a perfect 100 on the written test, all of my fellow classmen scored below 85).SciFi said:

I don't know how painful this would be...hopefully not too bad...'cause I've always found branding irons...appealing in situations like these...
Fortunately - not a fan of the bondage/bdsm stuff.SciFi said:

The branding iron could also be very cold and get the same effect. When I was in the navy, we weren't allowed to have tattoos (due to the nature of our specific work) so we used liquid nitrogen from one of our LOX farms to make different things very COLD, and gave ourselves scar tattoos that way. At least those tattoos disappeared after a year or two. When I received my second black belt, I had a Machinist Mate (MR) cut me a steel Korean symbol for 2nd Dan and used that on my rib cage...
