I wonder if hot springs are really as fun and popular as anime's make them out to be.
If anyone is wondering i never went to a hot spring in my life.

Closest I ever been is a sauna. But, I imagine Hot Springs are not as hot. So, perhaps could be a good experience. Would have to go to one.ssagwp said:

Actually, hot springs can be unbearably hot. But since they're often advertised as having healing properties and Japanese people are probably used to such hot water in the first place, it's not really commented on much.
That trope you see sometimes of anime characters passing out in the onsen is because it's so darn hot and they stay in too long.
TL;DR you just have to have a high tolerance to it.

They are really that hot...?
Uuuh, maybe I shouldn't go in then.

A lot of onsen are heated by magma deep underground, so they're no joke. XD
The geysers and pools in yellowstone national park are boiling hot. But the typical hot spring in which you would bath is more like a warm to hot bath depending on the spring. I have checked out a couple while hiking in Colorado, there are some 30 hot springs in the state.BattlequeenYume said:

So assuming you go to a hot spring during cold weather, besides the immediate temperature change while entering it, it should be kind of more tolerable for sensitive skin?
There are also a lot of thermal springs in Iceland where you can watch the northern lights while enjoying a relaxing dip outside.....even in winter :)
Sounds like pure bliss to me :3Kiho said:

I thought they just got drained out of stamina for playing in it for too long.otaku_emmy said:

Legally, hot tubs in the U.S. (most of it anyway) are not allowed to be installed with a setting above 102F. The problem is people who sit in them hotter than that tend to pass out and die. (elderly or drunk or both) When I had Japanese visitors I felt obliged override the equipment to heat it up to 104F.
Yes, they are. And for a very good albeit somewhat disturbing reason...Kiho said:

hm...well, a quick search indicates there is no average for Hot Spring temp, instead, a hot spring is classified as such if the temp is above the human body's temp.
Meanwhile saunas also basically go above that range (depends on what is heating them and the setting used, conventional saunas are around 160F/70C). So, if you can stand a sauna, you should be able to stand most hot springs people are allowed to go in.
