It just came to me... I've never seen a mailbox in anime Japan before (aside from postal themed anime).
I didn't think they used...US-style mailboxes at all.
They might in some areas, but it's very uncommon.
Most are inset into a stone wall or the wall of a house. Some are boxes mounted on the outside of a building. And in more rural areas where they do have stand alone boxes on a post, they are usually rectangular wooden boxes with a slanted roof.
